Early morning habits and routine

A good start to a day always makes a difference. It sets the tone and tempo for the rest of day. (Here we are referring to, roughly, the first one hour of each day after we wake up.)

Different people begin their day in different ways. There are also people who begin every day in a different way.

Some of the common activities generally practised by people are: having coffee or tea, reading newspapers, going for a walk or a run, playing games, visiting a nearby place of worship, meditation, listening to music, cooking, household chores, etc.

Of late, I don't keep my mobile phone on the bed. But still one of the first things I pick up is the mobile phone -- not to check or read messages, or surf social media; but to listen to some songs, especially old ones, or instrumental music, which make me feel good, right at the beginning of the day.

While the music plays, I also check for any news breaks; if something important happened while I was asleep.

I used to have coffee or tea. Now I have given that up, and I drink two glasses of plain water. Some people say, it's good to have lukewarm water mixed with lime and honey.  I am yet to begin that. Then, a few minutes of quick glance of different newspapers.

I step out for a combination of walk, jog and light stretching, aerobic exercises. Sometimes a few minutes of meditation too. The whole thing lasts not more than an hour. By the way, I don't take my mobile along.

After I am back, while I shower, I listen to music or some podcasts I am subscribed to. The podcasts or music continue while I make breakfast and have it.

Simultaneously, I glance at the news scroll that runs on different channels of the TV. I don't listen to the broadcasts (TV will be in mute), unless there is something live and important happening somewhere in the world.

It's generally suggested that we keep off technology and gadgets, in the morning hours. But I guess, what matters is for what, and how we use the gadgets. I don't think we can keep off gadgets completely always. (For me, the mobile is mostly a substitute for radio, newspapers, magazines and books. Calls, messaging and social media, comprise a lesser proportion of usage.)

This is more or less my usual early morning routine. How does it play out for you?

  1. My morning begins with coffee and devotions, reading my emails and completing a few social media tasks. Then it's off to exercise, shower and get to work for the day!

  2. More or less the same except for the walk or preparation of breakfast

  3. I've subscribed to a similar morning routine for several years now - and it serves me well. I have my morning cup of coffee while the network news plays in the background and I check email and social media. I then spend some time in prayer and writing morning pages. That leads me to a gentle morning workout (only 20 minutes or so) and a walk with the Bassett. At this point, I am energized (physically, mentally and spiritually) and ready to start my day :)

  4. I walk every morning and never take my phone - it's a time for me to pray and to enjoy the beauty of the morning. Then it's a shower followed by a cup of coffee and a quick look through my blog and SM before work - or on a day off it's a longer perusal of all things blogg-ish on my laptop.

Thanks for linking up with us at #MLSTL and I've shared this on my SM

  5. Hi, Pradeep - Since I've been retired (3 years this month!), my morning routine can vary greatly from day to day. This week we have been visiting with our son, DIL and grandson at a beach house in gorgeous Tofino, BC. This morning, I have given myself the luxury to stay in bed and read favourite blog posts while looking out at the beautiful, crashing waves below. I now hear my grandson's feet pattering down the stairs, so I am off to join him for breakfast. What could be more perfect?

  6. When I get up in the morning, I have coffee. And then, I watch the stock market (Dow Jones and Nasdaq). Stock markets open at 6:30 am West Coast time. The first one hour is very important, I think.

  7. My day starts with answering messages on phone, having two glasses of lukewarm water, watering the plants and an hour of exercise... in that order. But my day starts around 10am 😉

  8. No coffee for me, either.

My day depends on if I'm working or not. If I'm working that day, it's a mad dash to get out of bed, dressed, fed, and out the door. As I'm not a morning person, I'd rather sleep until I need to be awake. I've gotten my morning down to 45 minutes from out of bed to out the door.

  9. I really don't have a routine so it depends on what is going on for me that day. I always have a couple of cups of coffee though even if I am carrying them around with me as I get ready or do things.

  10. I start my day with a coffee and take a few moments of gratitude. After that my mornings may differ. I run some mornings with friends, other mornings I drop my grandson to kindy. If I'm not out I like to connect with my readers and answer their comments left on our blog. Thanks so much for joining us at Midlife Share the Love Party and sharing your morning routine. Have a great week and I'm sharing on social media.

  11. I am not a fan of early mornings. I usually get up at 0830, and make the coffee while my husband gets his shower. We sit together and drink our coffee and eat a brotchen for breakfast. Then, he is off to work and I start my daily household chores.
It's amazing how discombobulated I feel if there is any change to our morning routine!

  13. I agree that the way you start your day sets the tone for the rest of it. I watched an interesting video on Youtube by Admiral William McRaven (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgzLzbd-zT4) who said that "if you want to change the world, start off by making your bed" and he gives a list of reasons. It's a funny thing to inspire me, but it did. I particularly like what he says at the end of the video: "If, by chance, you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made. That you made. And a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better." My morning routine therefore always includes making my bed, as well as having breakfast, getting myself and my daughter dressed for the day and having a bible reading and prayer time.

    1. Thank you so much Hannah, for sharing this video of the speech by Adm. McRaven. Amazing. It makes lot of sense. Frankly, I am usually rushing out of bed every morning, and making the bed comes a little later. I must try this out.
