Free social media coming to an end?

Meta is rolling out globally paid subscription plans for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. From anonymous Story viewing and custom chat themes to next-generation AI "thinking modes," the social media giant is majorly shaking up its business model.

But don't panic just yet; the free versions aren't going anywhere, at least for now.

The video below gives a breakdown of what these new 'Plus' and 'Meta One' plans will mean for the users.

  1. $3 a month is nothing in western countries, and I would hope the charge is less in countries where income levels are lower. But if you multiply that by even 2% of the above social media platform users, it will be a huge amount of money for very little expenditure.

    1. Very true, Andrew. It all depends on whether the money is worth it, which depends on individual users and their priorities. But I am wondering: given the general awareness of social media's negative impact and online usage in general, will there be many takers for the paid model?

  3. If they charge to use them, I won't be using them. It'd be a great excuse for me to delete my account.

  4. The only social media I use is this blog. For now, it’s free!

  5. I won't pay for anything like that - free suits me, paid and it's goodbye.

  6. I'm with Yamini and Leanne. I won't be paying, either, if or when it comes to that. They are already monetizing me and my data as it is.

  7. Social media is more a menace now than a blessing. Some restrictions will be good. I'm working on a post about the violence that's spread on these platforms.

  9. I would encourage charging for Facebook and WhatsApp. Plus it should be xx amount per 50 messages a month and xx amount for 100 messages a month. This way we could avoid receiving 25 good morning message every morning and forcing us to reply every morning.

  10. Aside from blogs, I stopped using social media. It takes a toll on the mental state of people, especially the young. Did you know that the tech giant moguls are said to not even let their kids have smart phones? If true, it tells us they want to protect their own while they couldn't care less about the common folk.

  11. I'm still amazed that Blogger is still free, active and basically the same as it's been for 20 years. I would never pay for Facebook or Instagram. WhatsApp on the other hand is crucial for connections in Mexico and many other places outside the US. I am sorry that it got bought out by "Meta."

  12. Interesting times for social media. It feels like more and more platforms are testing ways to turn free services into paid experiences. I’m glad the free options are staying for now, but it will be interesting to see how people react to these changes.

  13. Will paid platforms reduce the rubbish usually seen on social media?
