Chennai trip - 5

Tuesday, March 8

We went to the beach to listen to the waves and see the expanse of the horizon for one last time before leaving. There, I found a fisherman taking out his boat to the sea. This 4 minute video was shot at 11 am. See how he waits for the right moment to ride over the waves; and then gradually he becomes just a speck.

What an interesting vessel - more surf board than rowing boat! There must be no fear of sharks thereabouts either, to have the legs dangling in teh water like that. Thankyou for this film - the sound so soothing and the sight absorbing! YAM xx

    1. Hi Yamini - Thank you. Yes it is so small. Rowing that against the waves must be quite a task.

  2. The life of a fisherman is very hard. Especially in Tamil Nadu. They have no idea where is the Indian and Sri Lanka border in the middle of the sea. Very often the Sri Lankan navy arrest them for crossing the international sea border and fishing in Sri Lankan water.

    1. Just a clarification. Sri Lankan Navy arrest only fishermen from Rameswaram. Chennai fishermen are not.

  3. How cool! I'm guessing he's done this quite a few times before!

  4. That is amazing footage! Thank you for sharing. I can only imagine time at sea on such a vessel. Does he even carry drinking water? And I wonder if this skill has been passed down by generations. This gentleman must have some incredible stories. And I certainly look forward to more of your tales. ~nods~ Be well!

    1. Hi Darla - Thank you. It's such a small boat. And to row against the waves must be quite a struggle. Surely a few generations must have been in this profession.

  5. Hi Pradeep - fishermen are so resilient, yet exceedingly knowledgeable about their waters, the marine life in those waters ... wonderful video - the sea is always mesmerising ... cheers Hilary

  6. That was a treat to the eye this morning Pradeep. Thank you. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience you provided for us. I amamazed at the fisherman's expertise! I would be too fearful to ever try. How do they fish when they get to where they are going with the waves rolling like that? Is there any way at ALL (I am sure there isn't) for a fisherman or anyone to know where the border is!?

    1. Hi Katie - Thank you, so much. Yes, it looks like it's quite a struggle. For him and family the vast sea must be his home, is it not? I presume in the deep sea there may not be so much waves.
