Earlier, I used to post and discuss political issues. I try my best not to do so now.
Sometimes, a political development -- like the exchange of words between Donald Trump, J D Vance and Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on Saturday -- is too tempting not to.
It's a topic of discussion worldwide, and social media is full of memes and conspiracy theories on why it all ended up the way it did.
I am not surprised at the exchange of words. I am sure such exchanges happen, probably even worse.
What surprised me was that it was done in public, in the full glare of the media.
There is a way issues are resolved. It's always done behind closed doors.
What is in public is only what should be in public.
I don't understand why the accepted norms were derailed. It has never happened before.
WHY ALL THIS WHEN THE DEAL WAS READY?
Also, if a deal was ready to be signed, what was the need to get into political issues, go back to the past and try to justify who was right and who was wrong about the war.
The whole point was about ending the war. The effort should have been to get the deal signed and move forward as quickly as possible -- for the sake of all.
None of the three had the presence of mind or inclination to say: "I think we are going off the rail. We need to cut this here. Let us get on with the deal and move on."
Something that was going on very well was needlessly messed up.
On the whole, I found the whole thing bizarre, and ugly.
Interestingly, towards the end, Trump said:
It's good for the American people to see what is going on. I think it's very important. That's why I kept this going for so long. … This is going to be great television.
Finally, it was just that. Good television.
It was good television, and I was shocked by the carry on and thought Trump really doesn't want the deal, if he did he wouldn't have carried on like that in public, just my thought
ReplyDeleteIt is undiplomatic. Whatever to be argued should have been done in a conference room and not.in front of world television. I am not pleased with the way Trump behaved.
ReplyDeleteUnderstand that the idiot was out to humiliate Zelenskyy because he thinks that makes him look like a tough guy. He doesn't realize he humiliated all of us USians. But he's always been an idiot, surrounded by yes-men. And then the couchf***er. Tone shaming. Yikes. They are both so awful. I am so ashamed of my fellow countrymen electing this clown show.

ReplyDeleteVZ initially tried not to engage, but when he did, just was not given a chance as the two bullies shouted him down, spoke over him, barracked him - even when he said 'you asked me here to speak, where is my chance?' T and V were not listening to him - making no attempt to whatsoever. It was a disgusting moment in which all pretence of diplomacy was shredded. These junkets ought not to take place until AFTER the real work has been done... YAM xx
All three leaders were aware that the proceedings were in public view and yet there were heated exchanges. I have no idea of their motivations.
ReplyDeleteHi Pradeep - it seems it was a set up for the underdog ... talk about unfairness. Just appalling - I am just trying to avoid it all - cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteThat feels more like a reality show than a press conference. Maybe that was the intention?
ReplyDeleteThe above comment is mine.
ReplyDeleteBizarre and ugly are good words to describe the meeting. Or a high school bully in action against a weaker student.
ReplyDeleteYou have mentioned it right. Why was the discussion/fight aired ? Because Musk & Co. (sorry Trump and Co) thought it will go down well with their supporters. But it backfired. I know many Indians who voted for him are now repenting.
