A2Z Challenge - Day 2 - Butter

It's so difficult to think of bread without it, is it not? During my school days, I used to literally feast on butter!

It is a good source of Vitamin A, D, E and Calcium. There is zero carbohydrates, sugar or protein, and it reduces the chances of obesity.

However, it's so high in calories, and also in saturated fat that increases the bad cholesterol (LDL) levels, which in turn can lead to cardiac issues. So, on the advice of many nutritionists, I have now reduced its intake.

IN FRIDGE OR IN CUPBOARD?

There is this good old argument about whether butter should be kept in refrigerator or outside it in the cupboard.

Back then in my younger days, we didn't have a fridge at home. So, we kept it in the cupboard even though Kerala has a hot climate almost through the year.

Now, we keep it outside when we have bread at home, and that's not every day.

You can't keep butter unrefrigerated for many days. It could turn rancid and get spoiled.

I am told salted butter stays longer outside the fridge.

The problem with keeping it in fridge is that you can't take it out and immediately spread it on a loaf of bread. Besides that, some people feel refrigeration alters the original taste.

WHAT ABOUT YOU?

Are you someone who loves a lot of butter?

Do you keep the packet of butter in fridge always, or outside?

  1. Of course you can have bread without butter. I much prefer it that way, in fact. Butter is a great ingredient, but I can take it or leave it most of the time.

  3. i love butter, both salted and unsalted. Salted I use for bread. Unsalted I use for making clarified butter (ghee).

  5. I used to like it. But because of my limited mobility i can't have high calorie foods. So nowadays I have reduced taking butter and sweet bread. Only multigrain bread.

    1. Hi Rajesh - Same here. We have wheat bread. And I often have it with honey. That's a good combination.

  6. I love butter. Especially, fresh, white butter--the way my mother and grandmother used to churn at home.
Like you, I have to be careful:)

    1. Hi Arti - Now no one has the time to churn at home. So we all have to buy it. Yes, better to limit it.

  8. Hi Pradeep - I'm a butter lover ... but am trying to cut back - but keep it in the fridge, remembering if necessary to take it out if I need it softer. Just enjoy - cheers Hilary

  9. I'm definitely a butter lover, but it seems like so many of us, I'm trying to moderate my indulgence. I'm certainly not ready to give it up altogether though. I keep mine in the fridge.

  12. I don't use a lot of butter, and usually mostly in the preparation of cakes. Though I admit that I like it spread over a slice of bread, maybe with jam :-)

  16. I love butter. LOVE. Real butter. Not margarine or other "buttery spreads". In the States, I kept it out, in a covered butter dish. It never lasted long enough to get moldy. I never would have thought it a problem! Now that I live in a tropical climate, I understand about butter getting gross when left out. Not to mention, summers here are so hot, the butter would melt if left out!

  17. Butter is always in fridge and homemade white butter in the freezer. Our family loves butter. Eating toast without butter is unthinkable! :-)

  18. Butter is such an important part of our daily life. We generally keep it in the fridge, but of course remove it an hour before we are planning to eat it with bread

  19. High Cholesterol runs in my family, so I don't eat butter on my bread. I do keep some in my fridge for baking though.

  20. I don't use it very often, usually just baking cookies. To this day my parents keep a stick of real butter on the counter, and it is so good when we make toast. They don't get sick so not sure if there is some truth in that salt! Probably they eat it fast enough that it doesn't have time to spoil!

  21. I only ate margarine in growing up... only after marrying and moving to a diff part of the country, did I begin eating butter. I didn't like it at first, but now its all we buy. I store my butter in fridge, but always leave out sticks in my butter tray for use. Who likes to try and spread hard butter!
